The Asadero Revolutionary - Turn Five

 NEW ZURIN OCCUPIED!

Crimsonian Forces have occupied the Mauxican City of New Zurin unopposed. While the Mauxican Revolutionary Army spent the Season defending Asadero, the hated Governor, Marshal Musculus, has also held position on the outskirts of the City, building defences. All the while, two regiments marched to New Zurin under the command of Brigadier General H. Charbonnier, occupying the city. It is believed that with the port secure, a convoy of Crimsonian ships have arrived and unloaded two additional regiments of paw, including four elite companies of Republican Guards. It is now believed that the total of Crimsonian forces in Mauxica amount to almost three thousand mice under arms.

MUSCULUS TAUNTS ASSEMBLY

An Officer under flag of truce has handed over a letter from the hated and despised and corpulent Governor to the Assembly, taunting them and inviting them to attack his lines in "open country." No response has been made by the Assembly or the Commander of the Army. It seems unlikely to this mouse that the Revolutionary Army will attempt to engage the Crimsonians in plain combat.

MOUSE FLU GRIPS MAUXICA

An Epidemic of Mouse Fly has run through Mauxica, making many citizens unwell, and leading to the deaths of hundreds. Among the dead is first President of the People's Assembly, Alexander Emmental, a proud and spry mouse. The Revolution is weakened by his loss. Also dead is Stilton Glup, representative of the Glup family in the assembly. Stilton was also reportedly [redacted] of the [redacted]. He has been replaced by [redacted].
The Epidemic is expected to pass rapidly across the nation.

MANCHEGO'S MOUSEDATE?

Oaxaca Manchego has been elected President of the Assembly in what have been described as "peculiar" circumstances. A large group of normally uninvolved delegates unexpectedly voted for Manchego, a populist who claims to represent the "common mouse." The more prominent delegates were surprised that such an unknown figure should be elected, and demanded a thorough investigation of the process. Immediate ex-President Maximouse moved that Manchego be removed from Office, and the election held again. This proposal was debated thoroughly and resulted in a tied vote. The Chairmouse, in accordance with long-established protocol, broke the tie in favour of the President's position - in this case, siding with Manchego, who remains President.

President Manchego has set out priorities that would see the issuance of new War Bonds, the establishment of a second Army under the Command of Leo Trotzkostromkoy, and a defensive posture in Asadero. Further debates have erupted over plans to hire Stilwenese mercenaries, elite infantry left from the recent Maustrian Wars. It is to be seen if these forces prove to be anything more than "pretty."

The Assembly has voted to reject the President's War Budget, 6 to 4. The budget was roundly criticised for its massive use of deficit funding. The Fiscal Conservatives seem firmly in control of the Assembly and are blocking large expansions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces.

A revised budget has passed the Assembly, with a smaller War Bond of only 60 cheese. Only 9 bases are created in this budget - and only three are of Infantry! It seems unlikely to this Journalist that this war can be won unless by ordinary mice with mouseket and bayonet!

INDEPENDENCE ADVOCATED!

The Letter Writing Committee established by President Tuttle has reported back to the Assembly with a solid declaration of Independence written by former President Emmental, completed only days before his death from the Mouse Flu. Perhaps it was the arduous task of constructing the document that weakened the redoubtable statesmouse.

The text under consideration is presented here for the edification of the reader:

An open letter to First Citizen Laurel of Crimsonia

We the mice of Mauxica present to you this statement of truths.
You impose taxes on us without our consent.
The Pratplatkof Accord places an unfair financial burden on the Mauxican people.
You garrison a standing army in Mauxican, led by Governor Marshal Musculus, which abandoned its post at the first sign of disorder and fled to the coast.
In doing so you promote disorder, disunity and prevent Mauxica from raising the tax revenue you yourself demand.
You refuse us the right to local representation, our People’s Assemby, despite our people being more able at restoring order than the actions of your Governor.
You refuse us the right to protect ourselves in the void left by your Governor, by preventing us from raising militia to protect our towns.
Your actions demonstrate the Crimsonian government has neglected its responsibilities in Mauxica.
The mice of Mauxica consider this neglect to be an abdication of responsibilities by the Crimsonian government.
In response to this neglect, this abdication and the failures of the Crimsonian government and its representative we, the mice of Mauxica, declare our right to self-determination. From this day forth the mice of Mauxica solemnly declare their right to a free and independent Mauxica, free of allegiance or political connection to any other power.
As a free and independent nation, we declare our rights to self-representation, the right to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish trade and commerce, and do all other acts and things which independent states may do.
The mice of Mauxica will not allow this freedom to be usurped.
We call on you First Citizen Laurel to recall your forces from Mauxica, lest the folly of the Mausropan campaign be repeated.

Signed on behalf of the mice of Mauxica
